How fertility medications are priced (and why they vary so much)
Specialty pharmacies, manufacturer discounts, and the price spread you can exploit.
Why prices vary so much
Fertility medications (Gonal-F, Follistim, Menopur, Cetrotide, Lupron) are 'specialty drugs.' They're sold through specialty pharmacies, not your local Walgreens. Each specialty pharmacy negotiates its own prices with manufacturers, and your insurance plan steers you to a preferred specialty pharmacy that may or may not have the best price.
Get at least two quotes
Major fertility specialty pharmacies: Freedom Fertility, MDR Pharmacy, Encompass Fertility, Walgreens Specialty, Village Fertility, ASD. Same prescription, different prices — differences of $500–$2,000 per cycle are routine. Your clinic can send the same e-prescription to multiple pharmacies.
Manufacturer assistance programs
EMD Serono Compassionate Care: 5–75% off Gonal-F based on income (under $200,000 AGI). Ferring Heart: discounts on Menopur, Bravelle, Novarel. Organon (Follistim, Ganirelix): commercial copay support. These stack with insurance and are often underused — apply during cycle planning, not after the fact.
Leftover medications
Returning unopened, unexpired meds is hard but not impossible — some specialty pharmacies accept returns within 7–14 days of delivery. Donation programs (Heart Beats, BabyQuest's medication donation) allow you to give leftover meds to other patients tax-deductibly.
